10 Day Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar

Explore Tanzania’s wildlife on safari, then slow down by the Indian Ocean with 3 nights in Zanzibar.

This 10 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar itinerary combines three of Northern Tanzania’s best known safari areas with time to relax on the island of Zanzibar.

Starting from Arusha, you travel through Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park before continuing to Zanzibar for three nights.

The route gives you time to experience Tanzania properly rather than trying to fit too many destinations into one trip. You spend several days on safari, with time for game drives and the changing landscapes of northern Tanzania, before ending the journey at the coast.

We handle the practical details on the ground, from safari transport and park arrangements to transfers and the transition from the mainland to Zanzibar.

Why Combine Safari and Zanzibar?

Tanzania works particularly well as a safari and beach destination because the two experiences are very different.

On safari, your days are shaped by wildlife, landscapes and early starts. In Zanzibar, the pace changes. You have time for the beach, the ocean, local food, history and simply enjoying your surroundings.

This itinerary gives you both without treating Zanzibar as an afterthought.

You experience the northern safari circuit first, then finish your holiday with three nights on the Indian Ocean.

What You Will Experience

Over 10 days, this itinerary brings together:

Wildlife

Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti game drives.

Tanzania's landscapes

Tarangire’s baobab, Ngorongoro highlands and the Serengeti plains.

Zanzibar's history

Stone Town and its distinctive streets, buildings and cultural influences.

The Indian Ocean

Witness Nakupenda, Prison Island, Nungwi and the Mnemba area.

Local experiences

Spice tour, local food and time in places where people actually live and work.

Time to slow down

The final days are intentionally less demanding than the safari section.

10 Day Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania

Arrive in Tanzania and meet your Tanzania Miracle Adventures representative.

There is no need to rush into activities on arrival day. After an international flight, the priority is getting settled and ready for the safari ahead.

Overnight: Arusha

After breakfast, leave Arusha and travel towards Tarangire National Park, one of the major safari destinations in northern Tanzania.

The park is particularly known for its elephants, large baobab trees and the Tarangire River, which plays an important role for wildlife, particularly during drier periods.

Spend the day on a game drive with your driver guide, looking for wildlife and experiencing the changing landscapes of the park.

Overnight: Karatu Town

Today you descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive.

The crater provides a very different safari environment from Tarangire and the Serengeti. Its enclosed landscape supports a high concentration of wildlife, making it one of the most distinctive places to visit in northern Tanzania.

After your crater experience, continue towards Serengeti National Park.

As you leave the Ngorongoro highlands and approach the Serengeti, the landscape gradually changes into the wide endless open plains hence the name Serengeti ( Meaning ‘Endless plains’ in the language of the Maasai, the residents of this area).

Overnight: Serengeti

Today is dedicated entirely to the Serengeti.

With no need to transfer to another destination, you have more time to explore the park with your guide and respond to what you find along the way.

Your guide will consider the season, recent wildlife activity, weather and the conditions on the ground when planning the day’s game drives.

You may encounter lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, hippos and many other species, although wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.

Overnight: Serengeti

Your second full day gives you more time to experience the Serengeti without rushing.

This is particularly valuable on safari because wildlife does not follow a timetable. Sometimes an interesting sighting may last only a few minutes. At other times, you may want to stay in one place and simply observe what is happening around you.

Having another full day also allows your guide to explore different areas rather than trying to cover too much ground in a single day.

Overnight: Serengeti

After breakfast, transfer for your flight from the Serengeti to Zanzibar.

We recommend flying out from the Serengeti to save over 9 hours of road transfer to Arusha and spending a night in Arusha. With the flight that takes about2 to 3 hours in total, you will be in Zanzibar on the same day, more relaxed.

You move from safari landscapes and game drives to the Indian Ocean and the historic streets of Zanzibar.

After checking into your accommodation in Stone Town, spend the evening at Forodhani Gardens, a popular waterfront gathering place where you can experience the evening atmosphere and sample local food.

Overnight: Stone Town

Today combines Zanzibar’s marine environment with its historic heart.

Nakupenda Sandbank

Travel by boat to Nakupenda Sandbank for time by the Indian Ocean.

Depending on the conditions, the experience can include swimming, relaxing on the sand and enjoying the surrounding marine environment.

Prison Island

Continue to Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island.

The island is close to Stone Town and is known for its history, coastal setting and giant tortoises.

Stone Town

Later, explore Stone Town, Zanzibar’s historic centre.

Walk through its narrow streets and learn about the history, architecture and cultural influences that have shaped the city over centuries.

After a full day of activities, return to your Stone Town accommodation.

Overnight: Stone Town

After breakfast, begin the journey towards the northern coast of Zanzibar.

Before reaching Nungwi, visit a local spice farm and learn about some of the spices and plants for which Zanzibar has long been associated.

After the spice tour, continue to Nungwi and check into your accommodation.

The evening is intentionally relaxed.

You can spend time at Nungwi Beach, enjoy a swim if conditions are suitable, or simply rest at the hotel after several active days.

Alternative: Safari Blue Full Day

Instead of the spice tour and relaxed Nungwi afternoon, you can choose a Safari Blue full day experience.

This gives you a full day on the water, with opportunities for swimming, snorkelling and enjoying Zanzibar’s coastal environment, depending on weather and sea conditions.

After Safari Blue experience, continue to your accommodation in Nungwi.

Overnight: Nungwi

Your final full day in Zanzibar begins on the water.

Take part in a dolphin tour and snorkeling experience around the Mnemba area, subject to sea conditions and the operating arrangements for the day.

The focus is on experiencing Zanzibar’s marine environment rather than simply ticking off activities.

Later in the day, return towards Nungwi and prepare for an evening sunset dhow cruise.

Watching the sun go down over the Indian Ocean from a traditional dhow provides a calm way to finish your Zanzibar experience.

Overnight: Nungwi

Depending on your departure time, you may enjoy your final morning in Zanzibar before your transfer to the airport for your onward journey.

Your 10 day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holiday comes to an end.

If your international flight arrangements require additional transfers or accommodation, Tanzania Miracle Adventures can help coordinate the necessary arrangements.

Key Things to Note About This Tour

Safari first. Zanzibar afterwards.

We deliberately plan this tour to start with Safari then Zanzibar because  Safari is a little rough and many hours in the vehicles. Then Zanzibar is calmer, and more relaxed.

The first six days focus on Tanzania’s northern safari circuit, giving you time in Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.

The second part moves to Zanzibar, where the pace changes to beaches, boats, Stone Town, food, culture and time by the ocean.

Two full days in the Serengeti

Rather than visiting the Serengeti for one rushed game drive, you have two full days to explore.

This gives your safari more breathing room and allows your guide to adapt the day’s route to wildlife activity and conditions.

Three nights in Zanzibar’s different settings

The Zanzibar portion is not simply three nights at a beach resort.

You experience: Stone Town → Indian Ocean → Nungwi

That gives you a chance to see different sides of Zanzibar rather than spending the entire stay in one location.

A balance of planned activities and free time

Not every moment needs to be scheduled.

Day 8 is a good example. After the spice experience, you can choose to enjoy a quiet evening in Nungwi, or replace that plan with a full day on the water through the Safari Blue option.

That flexibility is important because people travel differently.
