14 Days Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar

Combine a 7 day Machame Route climb with 4 nights in Zanzibar, experiencing two very different sides of Tanzania.

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro through the changing landscapes of the Machame Route, then leave the mountain behind and spend four nights discovering Zanzibar.

This 14 day Tanzania itinerary gives you time to experience Kilimanjaro properly before moving to the coast. The seven day climb takes you from the rainforest through the moorland and high alpine landscapes towards Uhuru Peak, followed by a recovery day in Moshi.

You then fly to Zanzibar for four nights combining Stone Town, Indian Ocean experiences and the beaches of Nungwi.

The result is a journey with a natural change of pace: walk, climb and acclimatize on Kilimanjaro, then slow down by the Indian Ocean.

Why Combine Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar?

On Kilimanjaro, your days are built around walking, altitude, changing vegetation and the mountain environment.

In Zanzibar, the pace changes completely.

You can walk through the historic streets of Stone Town, spend time on the Indian Ocean, visit a spice farm, explore the coast around Nungwi or simply rest after the climb.

The combination works particularly well because the experiences complement each other.

First, challenge yourself on the mountain. Then give yourself time to slow down.

What You Will Experience

Over 10 days, this itinerary brings together:

14 Day Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania

Meet your Tanzania Miracle Adventures team on arrival and transfer to Moshi Town.

The rest of the day is kept simple.

Settle into your accommodation, rest after your journey and prepare for the Kilimanjaro climb.

If needed, your team can also go through the arrangements for the following morning.

Overnight: Moshi Town

Start the 7 day Machame Route

After breakfast, transfer from Moshi to Machame Gate, where your registration and park entry arrangements are completed.

The climb begins in the rainforest, where the trail is surrounded by dense vegetation and can be wet depending on the weather.

You gradually gain altitude as you make your way towards Machame Camp.

The first day is about finding your rhythm rather than trying to walk quickly.

Overnight: Machame Camp

Continue climbing through the forest and into the moorland zone.

As you gain elevation, the vegetation becomes lower and more open.

The route eventually reaches the Shira Plateau, one of the distinctive landscapes of the Machame Route.

On clear days, there are views towards Kibo and the surrounding mountain landscape.

Overnight: Shira Camp

Today takes you higher before descending towards Barranco.

The route passes through the high-altitude landscape around Lava Tower before continuing towards Barranco Camp.

This kind of climb high, sleep lower progression is part of the reason longer Kilimanjaro itineraries allow more time for acclimatization.

The day’s landscape also changes considerably as you leave the Shira area behind.

Overnight: Barranco Camp

The day begins with the ascent of the Barranco Wall.

Although it looks imposing from below, the route involves a steady scramble rather than technical climbing.

Your mountain crew guides you through the section at a manageable pace.

From Barranco, continue towards Karanga Camp, where you spend the night at a higher elevation as you prepare for the final stages of the climb.

Overnight: Karanga Camp

Today you continue towards Barafu Camp, the final major camp before the summit attempt.

The landscape is now high, dry and largely without vegetation.

Once you reach camp, the focus changes from walking to preparing for summit night.

You will have an early meal, organize the equipment you need and rest before the climb begins during the night.

Overnight: Barafu Camp

Summit day

This is the most demanding day of the climb.

You begin during the early hours and climb towards the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The route continues towards Stella Point on the crater rim before continuing to Uhuru Peak, at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.

After spending time at the summit, begin the descent.

Continue down towards Mweka Camp, where you spend the night.

It is a long day, and your guide will manage the pace according to the group’s condition and the mountain conditions.

Overnight: Mweka Camp

Complete the Kilimanjaro climb

After breakfast, begin your final descent through the rainforest towards Mweka Gate.

Once you reach the gate, complete the necessary park exit arrangements and meet your transfer back to Moshi.

The climb is now complete.

The rest of the day is deliberately kept free for rest.

Overnight: Moshi Town

After breakfast, transfer for your flight to Zanzibar.

Once you arrive in Zanzibar, you will be transferred to your hotel in Stone Town.

The afternoon is intentionally light.

Settle into your room, rest and enjoy your first evening on the island.

Later, head to Forodhani Gardens, where the evening atmosphere gives you an easy introduction to Stone Town’s food and local life.

Overnight: Stone Town
Accommodation: Hotel
Meals: Breakfast

Today is your first full day in Zanzibar, and it is built around the sea.

Take part in a Safari Blue experience, spending the day on the waters with the final destination being Kwale Island. You will have opportunities for sailing, swimming, snorkeling and enjoying the marine environment.

The day is also a useful contrast to the Kilimanjaro experience. Instead of walking uphill for hours, you spend the day on the water and along Zanzibar’s coastline.

Return to your hotel later in the day for a relaxed evening.

Overnight: Stone Town
Accommodation: Hotel
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

After breakfast, visit Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island.

The island is a short boat journey from Stone Town and is known for its historic buildings and giant tortoises.

Return to Stone Town and spend time exploring the historic centre.

Rather than trying to cover every attraction in one afternoon, the focus is on experiencing the character of the old city: its narrow streets, architecture, markets and connection to Zanzibar’s long history as an Indian Ocean trading centre.

Return to your hotel in the evening.

Overnight: Stone Town
Accommodation: Hotel
Meals: Breakfast

Zanzibar’s history is closely connected with spices, and today takes you away from the historic centre into the island’s agricultural areas.

Visit a local spice farm and learn about some of the plants and spices grown on the island.

After the tour, continue toward Nungwi on the northern coast.

Check into your beach hotel and settle in for the final part of your Zanzibar stay.

The change from Stone Town to Nungwi is intentional. The first part of Zanzibar introduces you to the island’s history and culture. The second part gives you more time by the sea.

Overnight: Nungwi
Accommodation: Beach hotel
Meals: Breakfast

Your final full day in Zanzibar takes you back to the ocean.

Travel toward the Mnemba area for a marine experience that may include snorkeling and opportunities to see marine life.

Dolphin sightings are possible in the area, but they are wild animals and cannot be guaranteed. We prefer to explain this clearly rather than promise an encounter with dolphins.

Return to the northern coast and enjoy some free time before finishing the day with a sunset dhow cruise.

It is a slower final evening before your journey home.

Overnight: Nungwi
Accommodation: Beach hotel
Meals: Breakfast

Depending on your departure time, you may enjoy your final morning in Zanzibar before your transfer to the airport for your onward journey.

Your departure transfer will be arranged according to your flight time.

Meals: Breakfast

Key Things to Note About This Tour

Seven Days on Kilimanjaro

A seven day Machame itinerary gives you more time on the mountain than a rushed climb and allows the route to be spread across several stages.

This is carefully chosen to help you have  more time for acclimatization.

The Beach Comes Immediately After the Mountain

After your first night back in Moshi, you move to Zanzibar and continue your recovery there.

Two Different Zanzibar Experiences

The itinerary does not treat Zanzibar as simply a beach extension.

You experience:

  • Stone Town
  • Forodhani Gardens
  • Safari Blue
  • Prison Island
  • A spice farm
  • Nungwi
  • The Mnemba area
  • A sunset dhow cruise

This gives you both cultural and coastal experiences.

What Is the Machame Route Like?

The Machame Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the southern side and uses designated tented camps rather than the mountain huts used on the Marangu Route. The route eventually connects with the southern descent toward Mweka.

One of the things you notice during the climb is how much the environment changes.

The lower mountain is dominated by forest. Higher up, the vegetation becomes more open, eventually giving way to moorland and alpine terrain before the summit environment.

Kilimanjaro itself consists of three major volcanic features: Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. Kibo contains Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

The Machame Route therefore isn’t simply a long walk toward a summit. The landscape changes significantly as you gain altitude.

What Can You Expect in Zanzibar?

Zanzibar is not one single type of destination. And it may look small on the map, but once you are there,  you will find it totally different.

We have planned the Zanzibar part of the itinerary for two main areas – Stone Town (the west) and Nungwi in the north.

Stone Town and the northern beaches offer very different experiences.

Stone Town is about history, architecture, markets, food and the island’s Indian Ocean heritage.

The northern coast is about beaches, swimming, marine activities and a slower pace.
