Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) Arrival Guide: Transfers to Arusha & Moshi
Last updated: 13 October 2026
Quick Answer
International flights to northern Tanzania land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), not Arusha Airport. JRO sits between the two towns: roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour to Moshi and 1 to 1.5 hours to Arusha, depending on traffic. A pre-booked transfer meets you at arrivals with a name sign.
Kilimanjaro Airport vs Arusha Airport
Guests mix these up often, so check your ticket.
| Feature | Kilimanjaro International (JRO) | Arusha Airport (ARK) |
|---|---|---|
| Flights | International and domestic | Domestic and safari flights only |
| Location | Between Arusha and Moshi | About 8 km west of Arusha city centre |
| Use It For | Arriving from abroad, Kilimanjaro climbs | Zanzibar connections, flying between parks |
| Distance from Each Other | About 50 km | About 50 km |
You cannot fly internationally into Arusha Airport. If your booking says “Arusha,” your flight almost certainly lands at JRO. JRO is also often called KIA.
A real example: A guest told us he was flying out of “Arusha airport” after his safari. His safari driver planned the day around that, forgetting that the international flight was actually from Kilimanjaro International Airport, almost an hour further away. The guest nearly missed his flight.
Check the airport code on your ticket: JRO means Kilimanjaro International. ARK means Arusha Airport, which has no international flights.

Hungry after landing? Stop for a local meal
Many guests like to eat before reaching their hotel. There are decent local restaurants on the road to both Arusha and Moshi, where you can enjoy fresh local food with soft drinks or a cold beer. Tell your driver when you land, and we’ll plan the stop. We usually don’t charge extra for a meal stop along the way.
The road: construction and traffic
The Arusha–Moshi highway is the main road for the whole northern region. Expect trucks, buses, motorbikes and busy town sections. The government has been widening this corridor, including dual carriageway between Tengeru and Usa River, a new Kikafu Bridge near Moshi, and upgrades to roads around the airport. The driver will let you which stretches will ahve delays and when.
Leaving after your safari
If you’re flying home internationally, you depart from JRO, not Arusha Airport. The drive from Arusha is about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on traffic.
Rule of thumb: most airlines ask for check-in about 3 hours before an international flight. Add the drive, plus a buffer for traffic. For a typical international departure, that means leaving Arusha about 4.5–5 hours before your flight.
Domestic connections (for example to Zanzibar) usually leave from Arusha Airport (ARK), which is a short drive from Arusha town. There are also flights to Zanzibar that leave from Kilimanjaro International Airport. Always confirm which airport your ticket says before planning the day.
What you’ll see on the way
On the road to Moshi
- On a clear day, Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, appears on the left side of the vehicle.
- Coffee and banana trees line the route. Many first-time visitors are delighted to see them.
On the road to Arusha
- At some point on a clear day, Mount Meru appears on the right.
Along both routes
- Everyday Tanzanian life: hawkers, small shops, local buses and minibuses
- Farms, and cattle, goats and sheep grazing beside the road
